Memory Box Program
SCDP has participated in the Memory Box program for many years as a way of reaching out to the community. SCDP members paint memory boxes that are given to parents who have lost babies at birth. The boxes are given to the families to hold a hospital bracelet, lock of hair, blanket, clothing or any other memento the parents wish to keep. The boxes are donated to Long Beach Memorial Hospital. In 2025, the SCDP group donated 77 boxes to the hospital. Unfortunately, there is still a need for these boxes, and our group continues to support this program.
SCDP holds a quarterly "Memory Box Paint-Along" for members. The dates for 2026 January 5, April 6, July 6 and October 12 at 9:30 am to 12 Noon on Zoom as an opportunity to get together to paint memory boxes and connect with our members. We do not have a teacher at the paint alongs; everyone paints on their own. Memory boxes are paper mâché and are available from the Memory Box Chair. A few memory box pattern files are shown at the bottom of this page in case a design is needed. The patterns can be downloaded by simply clicking on the file.
For those members who live out of the area and would like to participate in the memory box program, you may paint a design centered on an 8" x 8" piece of watercolor paper, mail it to me and I can attach it to a memory box. The painted design should be no larger than 6" x 6" to fit on either our round or hexagon boxes.
